The Dakota State Trojans Women’s Basketball team would fall in the NAIA national semifinals on Monday as Dordt would knock off the Trojans 83-69.
The Defenders jumped out to an 11-0 lead before the Trojans would get on the board and lead 25-11 at the end of the first quarter and 39-29 at the break. The Trojans would start to battle back and get within four about midway into the fourth quarter, but the Defenders would hold off Dakota State advancing to its third straight NAIA national championship improving to 34-2 on the season. Dakota State finishes the year at 30-6. Dordt was led by Gracie Schoonhaven scoring a game high 34 points while Macy Sievers hit for 24 and Willow Bleaker had 11. Four players hit double figures for Dakota State as Tabor Teel had the team high 16 points while Cierra Watkins had 12, Caitlin Dyer had 11 and Mackenzi Simmons with 10 off the bench. Dordt advances to Tuesday’s championship game.
Pierre’s Ryann Barry still has three years of eligibility remaining after completing her first season with the Trojans. While Dakota State could lose some players to the transfer portal, the Trojans have just two seniors on the team.
