Team South Dakota High School girls are now 2-0 at the USA Hockey High School Girls National Tournament with a 4-3 win over WEHL Western out of Wisconsin on Thursday.
Team SD went down 1-0 after one period, the first time they trailed at periods end. But they would score the next four goals, including a 2-1 lead after two periods. Aberdeen’s Rachel Siefken would tie the game on the power play in the second and then Oahe’s Addison Hunsley would make it 2-1 getting her first goal and second point of the tournament. Brookings’ Kinzey Grendler made it 3-1 and Siefken notched her second goal of the game as Team SD led 4-1. A late rally didn’t amount for Wisconsin to tie the game and Team SD is now 2-0 and will be one of the top eight teams to advance to the quarterfinals on Saturday regardless of what happens on Friday. Aberdeen’s Chloe Vikander earned the win stopping 29 of 32 shots in net.
Team South Dakota finishes pool play at 9:00 Friday morning against 2-0 Jr. Steelheads of Idaho and then will wait to see when and who they will play on Saturday.
