PIERRE, (KCCR) — South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden has ordered flags at the State Capitol in Pierre to be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on this Saturday, March 14th to honor for state legislator Darrel “Dean” Schrempp. Schrempp served District 28-A, that today covers Dewey, Ziebach and Corson Counties. The Democrat served in the South Dakota House three times; from 1993 to 1995; 1997 to 1999 and from 2009 to 2016. Schrempp won the 1992 Democratic primary and defeated Republican Vince Dahlgren in that year’s general election. In 1994, Schrempp lost the seat to Mark Van Norman, who intern lost the General election to Republican Eric Bogue. Schrempp won the single seat back from Bogue in 1996. Bogue and Schrempp squared off again in 1998 for Senate with Bogue winning the chair. The two rematched again in 2000 with Bogue winning. Schrempp tried again in 2004 to be Bogue for the District 28 Senate seat and lost. It was an open seat because of term limits that had Schrempp winning the primary and a four-way general election to return to the House. Schrempp’s last election was 2010 when he defeated Van Norman in the primary. Services are Saturday at All Saints Parish in Eagle Butte at 10 am Central Time. Dean Schrempp was 90 years old.
