PIERRE, (KCCR) — Drought is taking more of a hold across southern South Dakota with this week’s update of the U-S Drought Monitor for the state. Most of the state south of Interstate 90 is in moderate drought with it extending into the Highway 34 corridor from Artesian to Flandreau. Moderate drought has grown by 13-percent in South Dakota this week. Severe drought is new to South Dakota this week; being seen in the southwest and along the Missouri River in Charles Mix, Bon Homme, Yankton and Clay Counties. Tripp County is now fully in 100-percent moderate drought with Mellette County up 54-percent to nearly 83-percent in moderate drought from 28-percent last week. Moderate drought in Jackson County is up this week from zero to 55-percent. Lyman County is over 99-percent abnormally dry and 26-percent in moderate drought. Abnormally dry areas have increased in Hughes County to 13-percent; up 10-percent in Stanley County to 71-percent. Abnormally dry areas in Hand County have grown 25-percent in the last week.
