It was a thrilling Friday night at Riggs High School as the Pierre Governor boys basketball team would pick up a double overtime victory 51-48. The Governor girls would fall to Mitchell 60-35 Friday night, but beat the Lincoln Patriots 48-22 on Saturday on the road.
The Governor boys would force overtime against the Kernels on a Corde Austin three near the final seconds of the fourth at 38-38. Pierre held the Kernels to only seven points in the fourth, but held them to just three in the second. While the Govs put up 12 in the fourth, it was the only quarter where the Govs scored double digits. Pierre went 8-10 in the two overtime periods including not making a field goal in the second overtime but went 7-8 from the line to get the win. Caiden Ahartz would leave the Govs with 14 points while Corde Austin had 12 and Lincoln Dilges had 10. Pierre improves to 6-11 on the year.
The Governor girls would start the weekend off with a 25 point loss to the Kernels at the Corn Palace as the Govs were led in scoring by Molly Olson with 11 points as a total of 10 players hit the scoresheet in the loss. But the Govs were right back in the win column with a 26 point win over the winless Patriots on Saturday. Emery Larson had 25 points, three more than what the Patriots were able to score in the game. Olson also hit double figures again with a 10 point afternoon as Pierre splits the weekend and moves to 5-12.
Both Governor teams have three games this week to close the season with games on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. Tuesday’s boys game at home will be on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports with Jon Winkler on the call.
