PIERRE, (KCCR) — A total of 14 people have died due to influenza during the 2025-26 flu season in South Dakota. There have been four in the last week according to the South Dakota Department of Health. Two of the 14 deaths have happened in Hughes County. Other flu-related deaths have been noted in Minnehaha, Brown, Fall River, Marshall and Meade Counties. Minnehaha has seen six flu-related deaths. So far, 163 cases have been confirmed in Hughes County with 12 of those becoming hospitalized. Stanley County has logged 25 cases with two of those needed a hospital. Other counties by cases include Tripp at 103, Brule at 87, Lyman at 35, 31 in Jackson, Potter at 14, Hand at 12, 10 in Dewey, nine in Mellette, seven in Ziebach, four in Sully, two in Hyde, and one in Haakon. Jones County is the only county in the state that has reported no cases of flu this flu season. Flu this season is affecting those most in the five to 24 year-old age bracket with nearly 39-hundred cases being reported. Flu activity in South Dakota is considered moderate and widespread across the case with a total for the season of 10-thousand 795 cases.
