Starting today and working through individuals on Saturday, the Pierre Governor gymnastics team will be in Mitchell for this year’s state Class AA competition.
Last Saturday, the Governors qualified as a team to reach the state competition for Friday and then individually, members qualified to compete on Saturday to win an individual championship in the different categories. The Govs are just one of eight teams who will compete for a state title today starting in the afternoon at 4:07 with the beam routine before competing on the floor, vault and wrapping up with the bars. Yankton, Brookings, Watertown, Harrisburg, Lincoln, Mitchell and Roosevelt are the other seven schools to compete as a team. Pierre didn’t have an easy way to qualify. Mikah Miller, the head coach of the Governors, says the team battled sickness all of last week prior to the qualifying meet with over half the team missing at least some practice dealing with sickness, but when it came to the meet, Miller says the only concern was how they recovered from the sickness…
Miller says qualifying as a team at state is always a big accomplishment…
Saturday begins the individual side of things as the Governors will have athletes in three categories with the floor category going first at 3:40. The Governors will see senior Rebecca Spitzer and freshman Jaelynn Muldoon with the bars category competing at 5:33 as Muldoon will be joined by sophomores Myclane Sheppick and Madelyn Merrill and then the beam category to close out the night with Spitzer, Muldoon, Sheppick, Merrill and freshman Emma Barnett. Miller says this weekend the team needs to support each other just like they have been doing all year…
