Coming up on Friday the Class A dual state tournament will take place at Riggs High School in Pierre and the Governors will battle through a tough field to try and claim the 2025-26 title.
The Governors are the five seed and would most likely have to beat two teams who they lost to in the regular season to reach the championship dual as the Govs start with the Watertown Arrows in the first round at 11:00 AM. The Governors dropped its dual to the Arrows at home part of a triangular against Tea with a 36-30 win but it came down to the very last matches for the Arrows to come out victorious. Pierre finished 9-3 on the season while Watertown finished 11-2 on the year. Even though Watertown did beat Pierre in Pierre, the Governors will still have the home mat advantage as Riggs hosts the tournament. Shawn Lewis, head coach of the Pierre Governors gives a call out to the Governor fans to take the time off to be there to pack the gym throughout the day…
While Sturgis is the top seed and undefeated, there is a lot of parity when it comes to the state tournament and Lewis says it’s interesting even when you look at the ESD conference…
Lewis says the Govs need to have patience, trust and faith in what they’re doing to start the day Friday…
The Governors will compete at 11:00 AM Friday with top seeded Sturgis taking on eight seed Rapid City Central on the other mat. Win or lose the Govs will be off until 2:00 when they compete either in the state semifinal or consolation semifinal which be after two seed Aberdeen Central faces seven seed West Central and three seed Brandon Valley takes on six seed Harrisburg at 12:30. The fifth place, third place and championship match will take place around 3:30. All match times are approximate except the 11:00 time, but each round will start around 15 minutes after completion of all matches from the previous round. You can see a full bracket here.
