For the final time in the regular season, the Pierre Governor wrestling teams will be on the mat for a dual as the girls and boys will host the Mitchell Kernels.
It is the last dual of the season for the girls as there is only the individual state tournament and not a dual state tournament. Pierre, though, can finish the dual season undefeated with a win over the Kernels. Mitchell lost to Brookings last time out which the Govs beat the Bobcats 51-30 back on January 6. The Governor girls will get the ESD tournament next week Thursday prior to the boys state dual tournament.
The Governor boys are 8-3 and in third place in the Class A standings heading into the final dual of the year. Pierre will face the 2-13 Kernels who will finish their dual season tonight and turn the attention to the individual side of things for the remainder of the year. While it is senior recognition for the Governors, the boys team will be wrestling in front of the home fans again when Pierre hosts the dual state tournament for a second straight year on Friday and Saturday, February 13-14 with Class A wrestling on Friday. Pierre needs to finish the dual season strong to help get a top four seed although there’s a lot of good teams in the top eight of Class A.
Seniors will be honored tonight for both the boys and girls as the Governor girls will honor only two seniors, Kezrey Benning and Jayda Steinke while the boys will recognize five seniors, Damon Horsley, Rowdy Menning, Alex Oedekoven, Walker West and Landon Tipton. The duals begin at 5:00 with a rolling schedule at Riggs High School
