(Warner, SD) – The long stretch of road games for Sully Buttes concluded on Saturday in Warner. However, a tough Saturday for Sully Buttes basketball spelled a sweep for the Monarch against the Chargers 49-21 in the girls and 66-60 for the boys. Actions returns on Tuesday in Onida.
The girls contest saw the turnover game return for the Chargers as the fast pace Lady Monarchs out paced the Sully Buttes 18-5 after one quarter of play. Sully Buttes on had four attempts from the field in the first quarter. The game spilled the same from the first quarter, the Chargers added five more in the second quarter and held Warner to 12 in the second making it 30-10.
The second half was much of the same but a series of turnovers into points in the third and fourth quarter had the Warner outscore Sully Buttes 21-11 in the second half making the final 49-21. Shooting wise for the Chargers had it struggles with 6 made shots from the field, but would go 75% from the free throw line at 9-12. Scottlyn Kinney’s presence in the post would help lead scoring for the Chargers with 12 points on the day. Neveah Westphal and Berkley Birney each had four with Jaydn Jaeger had one in the contest. Sully Buttes girls drop to 2-11 on the season.
The boys game proved to be a challenge for Sully Buttes. The Chargers would take a 33-26 lead to the half after a buzzer beater from Jett Yackley help give the Chargers momentum at the half. But it was the Monarchs with a big third quarter scoring 26 points holding the Chargers 18 points giving Warner a one point cushion heading in the fourth. The Chargers had everything going for them in the first half with shooting, free throws, and turnovers
The Chargers would be as far back as 10 points in the fourth going almost four and a half minutes without a made shot. Wesley Wittler would try his best to will his team back scoring eight of the nine points for Sully Buttes in the fourth quarter. But he would foul out in the final moments of the game. The Monarchs who made just one free throw in the first three quarters made the them when they mattered the most spoiling the Chargers two game winning streak with a 66-60 and dropping them to 9-4 on the season.
