(Colman, SD) – The Chargers will enter the new week with a two game losing streak heading into a big game against Stanley County on Tuesday. Sully Buttes played Hill-Beaver Creek in the Dakota Valley Classic. The Patriots are one of the best teams in Minnesota for the 1A Class who was undefeated heading into Saturday. The Patriots won 62-57.
It was a more slow methodical approach for Sully Buttes on Saturday against a team who has not a football or basketball game up to this point of the season. This basketball season, Hills-Beaver Creek has scored in the 60 point range twice prior to Saturdays contest. Every main statistic favored the Hills-Beaver Creek but the fight from the Chargers was a telling story.
Despite the Jamie Metzger show from Hills-Beaver Creek who put up 30 points and 11 rebounds in the win. Sully Buttes showed poise, patience, and different style of play in the loss.
The Chargers first quarter were shooting lights out from three point land making their first four shot from beyond the arc in their four attempts. Sully Buttes would have a quick six point advantage at 14-8 which closed quickly from the Patriots evening it up at 14-14 after one quarter of play.
Sully Buttes started slow in the second quarter have the Patriots on a quick 8-3 run. The Chargers saw their three point game evaporate in the second quarter and had to go on the attack more in the paint and midrange jumpers. The Chargers found their opportunities and would out score the Hills-Beaver Creek 8-7. However a 15-11 second quarter output by the Patriots would give them a 29-25 lead.
The highest scoring quarter would be the third with a total of 39 points scored. Sully Buttes three point shooting returned making three from outside the arc. Wesley Wittler after a slow first half scored ten of his 19 points in the third quarter while Jett Yackey added six of his 21 points in the quarter. However, Jamie Metzger for the Patriots was defensive struggle for the Chargers having his highest quarter with 11. Sully Buttes trailed and cut the lead to three after 24 minutes of basketball at 48-45.
The magic number for the Chargers is 60 points this season, but the Patriots only surrendered eight total shots in the fourth quarter and giving up 10 points while the other two came from the charity line. The free game at the end for the Patriots spoiled the Chargers chances of a win at the Dakota Valley Classic 62-57.
Sully Buttes fall to 7-3 on the season and will play one of the best games in the state Tuesday against Stanley County who currently is 10-1 on the season after a 67 -52 win over Cheyenne-Eagle Butte.
