PIERRE, (KCCR) — It appears attorneys in a Hughes County drug case are working out a plea deal. Defense attorney David Siebrasse told Sixth Circuit Judge Christina Klinger he and Hughes County State’s Attorney Casey Deibert have reached a verbal plea deal and are working to put the deal in writing to file. The deal would have 27 year-old Taylor Reece Hanson of Rock Valley, Iowa pleading guilty to Manufacture, Distribution or Possession of a Controlled Substance and Ingestion of an Intoxicant Other Than Alcohol. Count one is related to possession of cocaine. Klinger set sentencing for late March provided Court Service officers can complete a pre-plea presentence investigation before then. Siebrasse says Hanson has no felonies and plans to argue mitigating circumstances at sentencing. Hanson appeared via telephone for what was to be a pre-trial conference. A three-day trial was scheduled for February. Hanson is facing the charges following the investigation of a fatal vehicle-pedestrian crash he was involved with in Hughes County last year. The crash killed 23 year old Elvera DrivingHawk of Kennebec, who was walking on South Dakota Highway 34 approximately 20 miles east of Pierre, just west of De Gray Hill.
