(Onida, SD) – Sully Buttes basketball have a tough weekend which started on Friday when the Sully Buttes girls traveled to Highmore-Harrold to battle the undefeated Pirates. The Chargers would fall 57-26. The girls would also compete in the Redfield classic and battle on the fourth quarter but fell short 36-30. The Sully Buttes boys suffered their first loss of the season against Sioux Valley 70-58.
The Sully Buttes girls Friday made the trip over to Highmore-Harrold where the Chargers were looking to pull off an upset against the lone undefeated team in Region 6B. Sully Buttes would keep it close in the first quarter with both team struggling to shoot from the field in a 9-7 first quarter favoring the Pirates. It was the second quarter that saw the Chargers struggled shooting from the field and couldn’t recover. A 21 point second quarter from the Pirates courtesy of points off turnovers. In the last three quarters, the Chargers were outscored 48-19 in the last three quarters of play. Sully Buttes converted on just six made shots from the field. They would have a lot of trips to the charity stripe with 28 attempts and converting 12 on the evening. Sully Buttes fell to 1-7 after a 57-26 lost.
The girls would be back on the road the following day in the Redfield classic against the host team. The Chargers and Redfield would stay close the entire way. Sully Buttes would try to make one last rally in the fourth quarter but it wasn’t enough falling 38-32 against the Pheasants. The Chargers would drop to 1-8 on the season.
Sully Buttes boys made a trip over to Volga against Sioux Valley Cossacks. The second single A team the Chargers would face this season and would see their opponent rise to the challenge against the undefeated Chargers. Sully Buttes would take a 15-9 lead after one using the three point shot making three out of their six in the first to give them their one and only lead after one quarter of play 15-9. But the height of the Cossacks would be a challenge for the Chargers. Rebound, closing lanes, and physical play would force the Chargers to battle adversity in the final three quarters of play. Sioux Valley outscored Sully Buttes 24-17 in the second giving them a 33-32 lead which was the first time this season the Chargers would be trailing after one half of play.
The second half was a tough shooting half for Sully Buttes, and a rough three quarter shooting allowed the Cossacks outscore the Chargers 19-9 after three and 18-17 after four winning 70-58 giving the Chargers their first loss of the season.
Sully Buttes girls are 1-8 on the season while the boys are 5-1 on the year. Action for Sully Buttes basketball returns on Tuesday for the boys against Ipswich for a 7 p.m. tip-off and a double header against Miller on Thursday.
