PIERRE, (KCCR) — It’s still very early, but the lawmakers of District 24 already have their names connected to proposed legislation for the 2026 session starting in about two weeks. Senator Jim Mehlhaff has signed on as a co-sponsor to House Bill 1005, which would create a tax exemption for data centers. Representative Mike Weisgram is also a co-sponsor and the measure is the only one so far with Mehlhaff’s or Weisgram’s name. As for Representative Will Mortenson, he is the prime sponsor of House Bill 1006 which, if passed, would create at taskforce to study the creation of Indian medicaid managed care entities in South Dakota. Mortenson is a co-sponsor on two bills and a House Concurrent Resolution. That resolution urges the U-S Department of Homeland Security to establish a Tribal Law Enforcement Training Academy in the state. House Bill 1007 would amend the definition of law enforcement officer to include tribal police and Mortenson is also supporting Senate Bill Two, which would take firearm suppressors off the controlled weapons list.
