The Pierre Governor basketball teams would finish out 2025 this weekend with a win on Friday as both beat Sturgis, but both teams would fall to the Spearfish Spartans on Saturday.
The Governor girls would win on Friday 55-48 over Sturgis but fall by five, 47-42 to Spearfish on Saturday. After Pierre led on Friday by nine at the break, the Scoopers stormed out to a 41-34 lead after three quarters holding the Govs to just seven points. However, Molly Olson’s big fourth quarter helped propel the Govs back into the game and into the lead. Olson had eight in the fourth and Emery Larson had nine in the fourth to spark the comeback. Olson had 16 in the game to lead the Govs while Larson had 15. Pierre dropped its second game of the season on Saturday to Spearfish unable to squeak by the Spartans to be at 1-1.
For the Governor boys, they would win 61-50 over Sturgis on Friday but the Spartans would roll with a 60-35 victory over the Govs. On Friday night, the Govs would be led by Logan Witte, Corde Austin and Cooper Terwilliger as Witte and Austin each had 17 points while Terwilliger added in 16 as the Govs took advantage of the 15 Sturgis turnovers and nearly turned all of the them into points which concluded the second and third quarters where Sturgis had a chance to cut the deficit to a single possession, but instead the Govs led by seven. Saturday, the script was flipped as a good Spearfish team came to town and held the Govs to just 35 points. Austin had a team high 12 and Jerren Deal had 10 off the bench as the two in double figurers. The Govs drop to 1-1.
The Governors are now off until Saturday, January 3 when they face the Bismarck Demons in the Governor’s Cup matchup.
