(Onida, SD) – Sully Buttes basketball was home on Tuesday night with the Raiders from Lyman making a stop in Onida for their one and only regular season meeting this year. The girls contest saw Lyman run away with it early winning 68-13 while the Sully Buttes boys won a thriller 67-61.
The girls game was fast pace at tip-off. The Lyman girls would get up and down the floor creating turnovers and held the Chargers scoreless until 36 seconds were left on the clock with a trip to the free throw line. Transition basketball was on display in the contest. After one quarter of play it was 30-2. The second quarter was a low scoring quarter with the Chargers holding the Raiders to just nine points scored; but it was the Chargers who couldn’t get anything going offensively. After one half of play, Lyman lead 39-6. The second half was a much similar story. Lyman added 25 more points hold Sully Buttes to two points. The Chargers did outscore Lyman 5-4 in the fourth quarter. The final score was 68-13. The Chargers unofficially made three shots from the field adding seven made free throws in the contest.
The boys game is what you would expect if you wanted to tip-off the season with a bang. No one led by more than nine points all night. The Chargers had the height disadvantage, but they did not play like it on Tuesday night. The Raiders would take the first half lead after leading 14-11 after one and 37-34 after two. Sully Buttes saw contributions from everyone in every way. Block shots, steals, cleaning the glass, and much more. The second half would see that intensify outscoring Lyman 33-24. Wesley Wittler lead the way with a double-double with 27 points and 13 rebounds. The Chargers would not miss a free throw in the fourth quarter and out rebounded Lyman 36-32. The Chargers won the moments in the game they needed to get a 67-61 win over the Raiders and pick up their first win in dramatic fashion.
The Sully Buttes girls drop to 0-2 and will be in Herreid on Friday to face off against Herreid/Selby Area a 6:30. The boys are 1-0 and will host Winner on Saturday. Country 95.3 will have the coverage of both games on Country 95.3 and online at Country 95.3 sports on YouTube.
