The Pierre Governor basketball teams would open the season on Friday with games against the Stevens Raiders as the boys would get a 62-54 win, but the girls would fall 59-27.
In the girls game, Pierre struggled to get anything inside the arc as the Govs didn’t make a two pointer until the fourth quarter. The Governors got a three from Molly Olson, Jordyn Kirkie and Brynn Stoeser in the first half with Emery Larson going 4-4 from the free throw line. The Govs trailed 11-8 after one and 26-13 at the break. Alex Ludemann hit a three in the third as the Govs scored just five in the quarter. Larson would lead the team without hitting a field goal as she went 6-6 from the free throw line while Stoeser and Ludemann each had five as the Govs fall to 0-1.
For the boys game, the Govs would fend off the Raiders in the fourth quarter holding on to a single digit lead for nearly the entire eight minutes to get the first win over the Raiders in Rapid City. Corde Austin would lead the Governors with 19 points while Jerren Deal would add in 14 for the Govs coming off the bench and Logan Witte would have seven of his nine points in the fourth to help seal the win. Stevens, who loved to shoot the three, hit nine threes but had over 30 attempts in the game. Seth Paugh would have the game high 20 points for the Raiders.
The Governors will face the Central Cobblers to wrap up the weekend with the Governor girls having tip off at 1:00 and the boys at 2:00 Central Time. Coverage of the girls game will be on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports with Wyatt Burichka on the call.
