(Onida, SD) – Turnovers and missed opportunities were the story of the season opener in Onida for the Sully Buttes Chargers in a 56-31 loss against North Central. After a postponement forced the Sully Buttes to wait till Friday to play their first game of the season, they hosted the Thunder, a team which Sully Buttes has had the advantage in the series since 2006. This game was a learning experience for the Chargers.
The first quarter was a slow start to the game with only 16 points scored and the Chargers were turning the ball over early in the game and it would prove to be a theme in the contest. In total, Sully Buttes turned the ball over 23 times in the contest. The Chargers missed some opportunities in the second quarter only scoring five points and allowing the Thunder to capitalize on turnovers adding 15 more points in the second. Jaydn Jaegar was the only Charger to score in the first quarter with seven of her eleven points. Myli Weischedel would be the only scorer in the second quarter scoring five points. After one half of play, North Central had a 24-12 lead.
Sully Buttes had their best quarter in the third quarter shooting. Going four of seven from three point land and five of eight shooting in the third quarter. Once again, turnovers were a factor. The Chargers would have four of their six made threes occur in the third quarter. North Central would out score the Chargers in the second half 32-19 and held Sully Buttes to just five points in the fourth quarter. The Chargers would struggled against North Central’s trio of Amree Vander Vorst, Alaina Dosch, and Ella Batie that would combine for 49 of the 56 points on the night. The Chargers were able to share the scoring, but fell short on the scoreboard.
The Chargers out rebounded the Thunder 21-20 and would perform better from three point land shooting 40% to North Central’s 30%. Sully Buttes drop to 0-1 on the season and will have a quick turn around when they host Lyman Tuesday at 6 p.m. which will be the boys season opener. Country 95.3 will have the call Tuesday on KLXS and video coverage on Country 95.3 Sports on YouTube.
