Tuesday night, at the Riggs High School gym, the Pierre Governor wrestling teams would officially kick off its season with the annual wrestle offs for the boys and girls squads.
Starting with the boys, around 20 matches would take place to get some guys work and some opportunities were open to try and earn a spot in a varsity lineup. While head coach Shawn Lewis had to be one of the two refs of the night, he saw just some boys matches while reffing most of the girls matches. Jebben Keyes, assistant coach for the Governors had the chance to see all the matches along with the rest of the boys coaching staff. Keyes says Tuesday night showed the Govs have a lot of competitors…
Keyes says a night like this is important for the guys to be ready to go for the season…
The Governors will first compete in Mandan and Clark/Willow Lake the first weekend in December and Keyes says North Dakota will have already been wrestling by the time the Mandan tournament comes around…
On the girls side, Ben Caven takes over as the new girls head coach after coaching in the middle school for the last couple of years when he moved to Pierre from Iowa where he coached for nearly 20 years. Caven says getting to see the girls in action tonight, he says they were all fighting…
Being a part of middle school wrestling, Caven already knows several of the girls and he expects they will continue to work hard every day…
A night like tonight, Caven says, brings in the next step to being ready for the season…
The Governors boys and girls teams will have its first set a competition next weekend.
