The Oahe Capitals would win a pair of one goal games on Saturday against Mitchell to open the hockey season with the girls holding on for a 2-1 win and the boys scoring a buzzer beater to win 4-3.
The Capital girls would open the day with a hard defensive battle as Kierstan Miller would get the lone tally in the first two periods, scoring on a turnover in front of the net with 9.8 seconds remaining in the first period. The score remained 1-0 until Miller’s shot would be deflected by Micah Buffalo early in the third to beat Kaylie O’Connor and the Caps led 2-0. Within a minute later, Taylor Sorben would make it 2-1 redirecting a shot from Gina Wyatt, but the Marlins push would be snuffed out by Kylee Fromm and the Caps. Fromm made 22 saves on 23 shots as the Marlins were 0-4 on the power play.
In the boys game, Ian Schweitzer would tip in the first goal of the game redirecting a shot from Landry Van Roekel as the Caps led 1-0 after the first. A power play goal tied the game at 1-1 in the second, but Dylan Dodson would score a pair of goals just a minute and 12 seconds a part to lead 3-1 after two. Mitchell would get a power play goal again and then tie the game with under five minutes to go in the third. In the final seconds, the Caps would get the puck in the zone and as it came to the slot, it was misplayed by Mitchell, Dodson would get a touch on the puck and Brecken Fuhrman, in his first varsity game, would beat the goalie as time expired and the Caps would win 4-3 picking up a big two points to start the year as Mitchell falls to 0-2. Noah Lueking would make 11 saves on 14 shots to get his first varsity win.
Oahe will face Aberdeen on Sunday with the girls playing at 11:00 and the boys playing at 3:00. Both games will be on Capital City Rock and on YouTube at Capital City Rock Sports with Jon Winkler on the call.
