A Steve Steele Pierre Governor offense is always aggressive, and Friday night in the state championship, it paid dividends again, this time at the end of the first half to help propel the Govs to the 56-35 win over Yankton.
It was the highest scoring 11-man state championship in South Dakota history, but the play that will go down in Governor history was the Hail Mary at the end of the first half with Jerren Deal hitting Cooper Terwilliger to score and give Pierre a 35-28 lead at the break. The Governors didn’t use Porter Hunsley outside of a few plays all season on the offensive side. Hunsley then ran for 173 yards and had five total touchdowns in the game being named the most outstanding back and the Joe Robbie MVP. Then came the trophy presentation. Usually the seniors will go and get the trophy before bringing it to the team. This year was different. Jakob Van Balen, the younger brother of Aiden Van Balen who was tragically killed in a car accident in June of this year, would be the lone man to go and grab the trophy, for his brother and for the team.
