PIERRE, (KCCR) — A new state law will force Fort Pierre to find a new date to hold it’s municipal election. Fort Pierre holds its City Council race in April, but House Bill 1130 says elections can only be held in June or November. City Attorney Aaron Scheibe says it gets confusing from there…
The law gives slightly different timelines and provisions for odd numbered days which gets even more convoluted…
Scheibe expects the South Dakota legislature to address the nuances of the new law this winter…
The bill, sponsored by District 24 Representative Will Mortenson, was designed to create more participation in municipal elections, which generally see lower voter turn outs.
