The eight-nine matchup is one of the hardest matches to predict when it comes to the SoDak 16 and the Miller Rustlers would fall in four sets to the St. Thomas More Cavaliers in Murdo on Tuesday.
The Rustlers were the eight seed heading into the matchup looking to make the state tournament for the fourth straight year but were denied the opportunity by the nine seed Cavs by scores of 25-23, 22-25, 25-21 and 25-18. The win moves the Cavs to 29-9 on the season and into the state tournament as the six seed with two other upsets in the SoDak 16. Miller would be led by Paige Werdel with 13 kills on the night while Kaihlyn Anderberg had 10. Miller had seven aces in the match led by Gracen Werdel with three, but it wasn’t enough to overcome St. Thomas More who has now won 11 straight to reach the state tournament for the first time since 2011.
Miller finishes the season at 23-8 on the year and seniors Gracen Werdel, Paige Werdel, Kate Litchy, Anderberg, Brylee Wallman and Jolie Palmer will graduate.
