The South Dakota Coyotes defense would shutout the South Dakota State offense on Saturday in Vermillion to hold on and win 24-17 inside the DakotaDome in another historic battle in the rivalry.
LJ Philips Jr. would run from 32 yards out just three and a half minutes into the second quarter to give the Coyotes the 24-17 lead, breaking the second half tie and it would be all the scoring for the second half. SDSU would score on its very first play from scrimmage when Jack Smith took a toss 75 yards to the house. Phillips’ first touchdown would be the response from USD on a 15 play drive when he ran it in from 10 yards out to tie the game. Both teams would trade field goals and touchdowns to finish up the half at 17 apiece. Dejaun Lewis had the only turnover of the game picking off SDSU’s Jack Henry in the end zone in the fourth quarter which could have tied the game.
USD improves to 7-4 and now 5-2 in the Missouri Valley Football Conference while SDSU drops its third straight game at now 7-3 and 3-3 in the conference. It’s the first three game losing streak for the Jacks since 2013. South Dakota will travel to Carbondale, Illinois to face Southern Illinois on Saturday with a 12:00 kickoff.
