The Pierre Governors are heading back to the DakotaDome to play in the Class 11AA state final with a 28-13 win on Friday over the Huron Tigers on the road avenging an earlier loss in the season.
The Governors, who scored just seven points in the week two matchup, scored on each of the first two drives of the game as Carter Schiefelbein caught a 22 yard touchdown pass from Jerren Deal to lead 7-0 and then Deal’s 47 yard run gave the Govs a 14-7 lead which held until halftime. In the second half, Pierre had two touchdown runs by Porter Hunsley to extend the lead out with the first one coming off a blocked punt. Huron’s quarterback Anderson Porisch left the game with an injury and the Govs picked off the backup, Colt Culver twice by Hunsley and Sutton Sonnenschein to help seal the win as the Govs led 28-7 before the Tigers grabbed its only score of the second half.
Deal would 12-16 for 142 yards and a touchdown while also running for 155 yards and a touchdown. Hunsley finished with 94 yards on the ground while Schiefelbein would make seven catches for 66 yards breaking Badley Dean’s single season reception record on his fifth catch of the game. Pierre outgained Huron 395-225 with both teams turning the ball over twice in the game.
The Governors improve to 8-3 while Huron finishes at 8-3. The Govs will travel to Vermillion on Friday to face the top seed, Yankton Bucks in a rematch of the 2023 state championship. Coverage will begin on Friday at 6:30 with kickoff at 7:00 on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports.
