Despite outgaining Herreid/Selby Area 381-220, the Sully Buttes Chargers turned the ball over five times and fell 22-20 to the Wolverines in Herreid Friday night.
The Chargers led 6-0 in the first quarter thanks to a Kadyn Westergren 24 yard run, but the Wolverines answered back to start the second quarter with a Thatcher Kihne to Keegan Russell eight yard TD pass, and extra point giving the Wolverines the lead. On the ensuing drive a Wesley Wittler 78 yard scramble gave Sully Buttes the lead back 14-8 after a two point conversion.
Going into the second half, the Chargers were moving the ball, when a fumble on the exchange occurred between Wittler and Westergren. Herreid/Selby Area recovered at the Charger 48 yard line and ten plays later, a Houston Hauge two yard run and extra point gave the Wolverines back the lead at 16-14. The first play of the fourth quarter saw HSA score again on a Kihne ten yard run, but the extra point failed to make the score 22-14. After both teams forced a turnover, it was a Wittler to Jett Yackley 16 yard pass to make the score 22-20 with a failed two point try. Sully Buttes had one more chance with 30 seconds left in the game but the drive fell a yard and a half short of first down on a fourth and three from the Wolverine 34. The Wolverines ran out the clock improving to 6-2, heading into their bye week before 9-Man postseason action.
The Chargers committed three interceptions and two fumbles, to seal their fate. Sully Buttes will be at home Friday night for senior night against Sunshine Bible Academy.
