PIERRE, (KCCR) — The South Dakota Highway Patrol has released the names of those involved in a fatal two-vehicle head-on crash last week in Spink County. At the time of the crash, a Ford F-150 pulling a camper was traveling north on South Dakota Highway 37, approximately 19 miles north of Huron. A box truck driven by 44 year-old Alfredo Vasquez-Iraola of Huron was traveling south at the same time. The box truck crossed the center line and struck the Ford, which was driven by 65 year-old Thomas Wempe of Fort Pierre. Sixty-three year-old Laurel Wempe of Fort Pierre was also in the pick-up. The pickup came to rest in the east ditch while the box truck stopped on the shoulder of the northbound lane. Thomas Wempe suffered serious, non-life threatening injuries in the crash while Laurel Wempe received minor injuries. Vasquez-Iraola was killed in the crash. Both Wempes were using seat belts at the time of the crash. Seat belt use by Vasquez-Iraola is under investigation.
