The Pierre Governors were down 21-0 late in the first half and battled back to tie the game at 28-28 before Yankton scored with just six seconds remaining to beat the Govs 35-28 in Yankton Friday night.
Yankton scored on its first two possessions of the game while the Govs stumbled offensively out of the gates. Pierre, though, did score late in the first half as Kaleb Lounsbury found Jerren Deal to make it 21-7 at the half. The Govs scored again to open the second half to make it 21-14 and while Yankton put it to a 28-14 lead, the Governors were able to score twice, tying the game with 45 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter on a second Deal touchdown catch from Lounsbury. However, Tate Beste would find Owen Eidsness for a 25 yard strike with just six seconds remaining to reclaim the lead and Pierre couldn’t pull out any tricks on the kickoff as the clock expired and the Bucks escaped with the Homecoming win.
Lounsbury would go 17-33 for 239 yards, three touchdowns and an interception as Deal caught two touchdown passes and Carter Schiefelbein had the other TD grab getting 111 yards through the air on six catches. Carter Merrill would run for 117 yards on 20 carries and a touchdown as Pierre outgained Yankton in the second half 264-209. Beste would throw for 261 yards and Eidsness had 120 yards on 10 catches for Yankton.
Pierre falls to 3-2 and Yankton moves to 4-1. The Govs will travel to Sioux Falls on Friday to face the O’Gorman Knights. Coverage will start at 4:30 with kickoff at 5:00 on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports.
