
PIERRE, (KCCR) — Heavy rain for days on end last week have helped further reduce drought conditions in South Dakota as fall has arrived. Statewide, areas of no drought have expanded nine-percent to 8-percent while abnormally dry areas fell nine-percent. Moderate drought declined five percent to two-and-a-half percent of South Dakota. Moderate drought is the worst category in the state and is present along and south of the White River in southern Lyman, southeast Jones, eastern Mellette, northern Tripp, southwest Brule and northern Gregory and Charlex Mix Counties. Hughes, Stanley, Hand, Hyde, Potter, Sully, Buffalo, Dewey, Ziebach and Haakon Counties are 100-percent drought-free. Lyman County saw drought less areas expand by 43-percent while abnormally dry fell 43-percent. Moderate drought fell two-percent to 29-percent. Jones County is now 57-percent drought-free, up 54-percent from last week. Moderate drought fell from 35-percent to less that two-percent in the last week.
