PIERRE, (KCCR) — An Eagle Butte man has been sentenced to federal prison time for a domestic violence incident nearly a year ago. U-S Attorney Alison Ramsdell says 36 year-old Richard Hale, Junior was sentenced Monday to seven years in federal prison with three years of supervised release after the prison term. Hale must also pay 200-dollars to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Hale was first indicted on charges of Child Abuse and Assault with a Dangerous Weapon in March and pleaded guilty back on June 26th. Ramsdell says on October 5th of 2024 Hale assaulted an intimate partner by striking her head multiple times with a cell phone while she was holding their infant child. At one point during the assault, Hale grabbed the child by the arm. The adult victim suffered a cut to her head. The child received multiple injuries that included skull and arm fractures. The U-S Attorney’s Office prosecuted the case because of the Major Crimes Act, a federal statute mandating that certain violent crimes alleged to have occurred in Indian County be prosecuted in federal court instead of state court.
