PIERRE, (KCCR) — Two local organizations devoted to making sure children do not go hungry are benefiting from grants from the South Dakota Community Foundation. The Bernie Christenson Feed the Children Fund awarded seven-thousand, 500-dollars in grants to the Governor Grocery program at Georgia Morse Middle School and T-F Riggs High and Pierre Area Referral Services’ Backpack Program. The late Bernie Christenson was the founding executive director of the South Dakota Community Fund. His wife Sandy says he husband would be thrilled by the donation as his last wishes were to start something for children. Governor Grocery provides free food, hygiene items, school supplies, winter clothes and weekend meals for middle school kid and grab-and-go bags for high schoolers. The PARS Backpack Program provides weekly food bags to 400 children in the Pierre and Stanley County districts. Gov Grocery needs sponsorships of 75-dollars per month to feed one child. Each bag in the Backpack program cost about five-dollars to build. Donation information for both causes is located below.
Donations for Governor Grocery may be dropped off at Georgia Morse Middle School or mailed to Governor Grocery, Box 836, Pierre, SD 57501.
