PIERRE, (KCCR) — A managed youth deer hunt will be held in Potter County this winter. The youth Deer Camp is taking place December 19th to the 21st at Brown’s Lodge and Hunting Ranch in Gettysburg. The Missouri River Corridor Youth Hunt is a collaboration with the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department to give four youth hunters between the age of 10 and 15 to hunt a deer for the first time. The camp is open to first-time youth hunters and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Participants will learn how to select the right firearm and ammunition for deer hunting, improve shooting and firearms safety, sighting in a firearm and proper care and field dressing of an animal. Youth hunters selected will get meals, snacks, lodging, appropriate licenses, firearm, ammo, safety equipment, binoculars and transportation to the field. Each hunter will be paired with an experienced guide. Participation in the Deer Camp is restricted to four youth. Applicants will be selected based on application response. Successful applicants are required to attend a pre-hunt meeting. The deadline to apply for the Youth Deer Camp is Friday, August 15th.
