
FORT THOMPSON, (KCCR) — One person was killed Thursday in a two vehicle crash in Buffalo County. According to the South Dakota Highway Patrol the crash happened 14 miles east of Fort Thompson on Highway 34 around 11-pm, The preliminary investigation of the crash indicates at 2015 Peterbilt hauling hay bales was stopped on the highway after a strap broke, causing bales to fall off the trailer. The driver, a 24 year-old man from Hendrum, Minnesota, attempted to turn the semi around near a gravel road intersection in an attempt to go back can clear the bales of the road. However, the semi became stuck in the south ditch. A 2022 Toyota Prius driven by a 43 year-old man from Willow Lake was approaching the semi at the time and collided with the trailer. The driver of the semi was out of the vehicle at the time of the crash and was not injured. The driver of the Prius was using a seat belt, but was killed in the crash. The names of those involved are being withheld pending notification of family.
