Pierre Post 8 would get a split of a doubleheader with Watertown Post 17 Friday afternoon with the Eights winning 6-5 in eight innings in game one, but lost 9-4 in game two.
In the first game, Watertown jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as the first four guys reached base, but Brayden Houlette would settle in, get a double play in the first including another three in the game for four total to allow five runs on five hits with three walks in seven innings. Pierre, down 3-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth, tied the game with RBI hits from Dawson Getz, Charlie Simpson and Ridge Leimbach. And after Watertown retook the lead with two runs in the top of the seventh, Pierre was down to their final out with nobody on base. Back-to-back doubles by Cooper Terwilliger and Leimbach made it 5-4 and Sutton Sonnenschein tied it with an RBI single. In the bottom of the eighth, Carter Schiefelbein would single with two outs and as Getz had a base hit into right, he never stopped running and with a bobble in the outfield and a offline throw, Schiefelbein would score the game winning run to walk off the win. Getz would get the win on the mound throwing a scoreless eighth inning.
The Watertown bats would help score a run in each of the first four innings as they got a run in the first, second and third, doubling it in the fourth to lead 6-2 after four innings. Kaden Rylance had two RBI hits in the first three innings and Mitch Olson drove in two runs. Trevor Rounds and Terwilliger each had an RBI single before the Eights got within two in the bottom of the sixth as Will Danburg would drive in a run and a two out error made it a 6-4 game. Watertown added three runs in the top of the seventh to finish out the win and split. Porter Hunsley would take the loss on the mound giving up 12 hits over six innings allowing six runs with two strikeouts.
Saturday’s games against Jamestown was canceled due to field conditions from the weather earlier in the week in North Dakota. Pierre is 14-9 in South Dakota games and will close the regular season this week hosting Bismarck on Tuesday and traveling to Brandon Valley on Thursday. All four games will be on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports.
