PIERRE, (KCCR) — An active weather pattern may be bringing severe weather to parts of South Dakota, but it is easing drought concerns in the state. Statewide, severe drought is unchanged at three-quarters of a percent, but moderate drought fell five-percent this week to 14-percent while abnormally dry areas fell nine-percent. Drought free parts of the state have increased 10-percent to 44-percent of South Dakota. Across central South Dakota, moderate drought is depicted in eastern Lyman, Brule and most of Buffalo County. Western Jackson County is also in moderate drought. Much of the Missouri River valley is abnormally dry. Heavy rains along on south of I-90 in Lyman County have created an area of no drought that represents 17-percent of the county. Meanwhile, moderate drought has increased 14-percent along the Missouri River. Moderate drought was eliminated this week from Hughes, Hand and Hyde Counties. Ziebach County is 91-percent drought free, a four-percent decline from last week as abnormally dry areas increased four-percent.
