Post 8 would open up July with a bang Tuesday night by picking up their first doubleheader home sweep of the season against Sioux Falls West winning 10-7 and 10-2.
West ended up starting off the fireworks on 4th of July week with a two run home run from Chris Logue in the second to give West a 2-0 lead. It would be the lone time in either of the two games West would have control of the lead. From there, a combination of JJ Bucholz’s consistency on the mound and the Post 8 bats coming alive put Pierre in a position to hop in the driver’s seat. West helped Pierre by giving up multiple unearned runs and lapses defensively to allow Pierre to pull ahead. Pierre would score 6 combined runs in the fifth and sixth innings with Cooper Terwilliger and Charlie Simpson among those who got RBIs. Terwilliger and Dawson Getz would each end up with three hits in game one to help generate the offense. After a rally late in the top of the seventh, Post 8 put the game away with the tying run on base with Bucholz getting all but last out in a solid performance from the mound.
Game two would be even more lopsided in favor of Pierre, but it didn’t start that way. Both pitchers dominated as Pierre’s Will Danburg and West’s Kyler Boyd held both sides scoreless through the first three innings of action. However, the floodgates would open in the fourth with Pierre breaking through via a Sutton Sonnenschein two RBI single. Sonnenschein would add another two run double in the fifth in addition to a Dawson Getz RBI Triple as part of a six run frame for Post 8. Pierre would coast the rest of the way to a 10-2 win, and its first home doubleheader sweep of the season.
Post 8 now looks ahead to Wednesday as they face off against Aberdeen on the road. Coverage starts at 3:45 and first pitch at 4:00 on KCCR with Jon Winkler on the call.
