
PIERRE, (KCCR) — Austal U-S-A, the Mobile, Alabama shipbuilder that constructed the U-S-S Pierre, officially announced Monday that Littoral Combat Ship-38 successfully completed its acceptance or sea trials on June 11th. The Pierre is the 19th Independence-variant L-C-S built by Austal is the final ship in the L-C-S program. Acceptance trials are a comprehensive testing conducted on the ship’s major systems and equipment to demonstrate successful operation and readiness. The Navy’s Board of Inspection and Survey also takes part in the sea trials to validate the ship’s performance. During the L-C-S program, Austal delivered three L-C-S to the Navy in a single year. The Pierre will be home ported in San Diego following a commissioning ceremony in Panama City Beach, Florida. In addition to closing out the L-C-S program with Pierre, Austal is currently building seven more Navy and Coast Guard ships, modules for Virginia and Columbia-Class submarines and aircraft elevators for the Ford-class aircraft carrier fleet.
