PIERRE, (KCCR) — A state prison inmate with a Hughes County conviction has died. According to a release from the South Dakota Department of Corrections 29 year-old Marc Best passed away Wednesday while in a comfort care setting inside the Jameson Annex of the South Dakota State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls. The release notes Best was in comfort care for some time, but was not more specific about how long Best was under comfort care. Best was in prison on an Aggravated Assault charge in Hughes County. He was also serving time for Sliming or Assaulting an Officer by an Inmate and Simple Assault on Law Enforcement in Minnehaha County. Best was sentenced on the Hughes County charge to 15 years in prison with five years suspended and credit for 75 days served in jail on October 7th of 2014. Best was sentenced for assaulting guards in prison on three occasions starting in 2017. He also admitted in the three court files to being a habitual offender which extended his sentences for the prison assaults.
