Former Oahe Capital Carter Sanderson and the Muskegon Lumberjacks are champions of the USHL after a 4-3 overtime win Tuesday night in Waterloo in Game Five of the Clark Cup Final.
It was the third straight overtime game to close out the series and fourth overtime overall. It was a back and forth final game as Muskegon would take a 2-0 lead in the first period as Tynan Lawrence and Jack Christ each scored in the first, but Waterloo tied the game 2-2 after two periods. Christ would make it 3-2 early in the third period, but again Waterloo would tie the game to send it to overtime. Six minutes into overtime, Christ would finish off the hat trick and score the game winning, championship goal sending he and his teammates into a frenzy on the ice celebrating the Clark Cup Championship, the first in Muskegon’s franchise history. Sanderson was a plus 2 on the night as he finished the postseason with an assist and a plus/minus of 4 overall in his first season and postseason opportunity. Sanderson will only be a senior in high school next year and will be with Muskegon again. He says he wants to have his role increase for this team after being the third youngest player on the team this year…
Sanderson finished the regular season with five goals and six assists. The Pierre area has seen an FCS Football Champion (Grey Zabel), FBS Football Champion (Lincoln Kienholz) and now a Clark Cup Champion in the first five months of 2025.
