PIERRE, (KCCR) — Canning Road in Hughes County remains closed to traffic days after a train derailment Sunday. Hughes County Sheriff Patrick Callahan says several cars on a train derailed near the grain elevator in Blunt. The derailment of the Rapid City, Pierre and Eastern train forced at 90 minute closure of both lanes of U-S Highway 14 as crews worked to remove the overturned rail cars. Meanwhile a separate train derailment in Aurora County is impacting the flow of cars to terminals in Chamberlain, Kimball and Kennebec. At least seven cars on the Ringneck and Western’s line from Kennebec to Mitchell derailed near a the Platte Creek trestle three miles west of White Lake. The Ringneck and Western’s line is the former Mitchell to Rapid City line that runs alongside Interstate 90. Ringneck’s parent company WATCO, purchased the line in 2021 from the State of South Dakota.
