The Pierre Governors would finish the final weekend of the season winning three of four sweeping Washington 12-7 and 8-2 on Friday before splitting against Lincoln winning 4-2 and falling 4-1 in nine innings.
In game one Friday, the Govs got off to a 3-0 lead with a quick start in the first, however the Warriors would respond in a big way with a 3-Run top of the third to put themselves on top 4-3. Yet, in the very next frame the Govs would step up with a six run inning. This frame was highlighted by a 3-Run RBI Triple from Carter Schiefelbein that would help to put the Govs on top by a score of 8-4. George Stalley would also add an RBI in this frame to send Schiefelbein home and bring complete a 9-4 lead for the Govs. The Govs would put their heads down and take care of business with a 2-Run sixth thanks to a Parker O’Bryan RBI Single and an RBI Walk from Stalley.
Game two on Friday would feature Schiefelbein picking up where he left off with a leadoff triple, and the game would snowball from there. Stalley, Porter Hunsley, Dawson Getz, and Ridge Leimbach would all have an RBI in the game, but it was the Schiefelbein show most of the way. He would end up with 4 RBIs, 3 Hits, and 3 Runs in 3 at-bats, accounting for half of the runs scored for the Govs in this game. JJ Bucholz was equally as impressive with a complete game performance, 4 Strikeouts, and only 2 Earned Runs allowed.
On Saturday, the Govs got off to a slow start early with the offense stuck for the first few innings. Leimbach did his part in his final regular season doubleheader with great pitching even with a couple of runs given up in the first four innings. Without Leimbach’s efficiency, there may not have been a way for Pierre to come back. In the bottom of the fourth, a couple of odd hop hits from Parker O’Bryan and Carter Schiefelbein helped score all four runs to give his team a 4-2 lead. The rest of the game was all about the pitching. Christensen would end his day with 6.0 innings pitched, 3 earned runs, and 4 strikeouts. Leimbach would get all but one out in the game with 6 ⅔ innings, 12 strikeouts, and just 1 earned run given up.
In game two, it was simply one word, wild. The game started off as a pitcher’s duel with Will Danburg and Dietrich Haan. Outside of a lone run in the second by Lincoln, both teams would be held scoreless for almost the entire game. Haan was especially hard to deal with for the Pierre offense as they had just one hit entering the bottom half of the seventh. However, down to their last chance, Porter Hunsley and Leimbach would deliver as Leimbach drove in Hunsley with an RBI Single to tie the game at 1-1. It sent the game to extra innings in which both teams would come close in the eighth to ending things, but were both held scoreless. In the ninth the dam burst for Pierre as Danburg seemed to hit the wall and the Governors gave up three runs, a stretch they could not recover.
The final day of games is Sunday where Pierre will find out its opponent and the playoffs will be set Monday morning. Playoff coverage will be on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports.
