The Pierre Governor baseball team would sweep the Huron Tigers on Tuesday with a 10-0 five inning win in game one, before surviving with a 3-2 walk-off win in game two at Hyde Stadium.
Pierre used six walks in the first inning, scoring three times on wild pitches and a bases loaded walk to score six runs in game one and add another four runs in the second to storm out to a 10-0 lead. Trevor Rounds went 2-2 with three RBIs as Ridge Leimbach, JJ Bucholz, Parker O’Bryan and Sutton Sonnenschein all had an RBI in the win. Weston Northrup had to throw just 56 pitches in a five inning four hit shutout as he had just one walk and three strikeouts.
Game two was a little harder for the Govs to get runs. Bridger Babcock did have an RBI single in the bottom of the second after Rounds had a double. Pierre led 2-0 after two and held up until an RBI ground out from Brady Feenstra in the sixth made it 2-1 and then a two error in the top of the seventh scored the tying run. In the bottom of the seventh, Carter Schiefelbein would have an infield single, but the throw from the pitcher would get away from first base allowing Ayden Johnson, who was running after Cooper Terwilliger’s lead off single, to score the game winning run for the Govs to walk off and beat the Tigers. Brennan McCullough threw a gem on the mound going six innings allowing six hits, two runs, one earned, with a walk and five strikeouts. He did not factor into the decision. Will Danburg got the final three outs in the seventh with a strikeout picking up his fifth win of the season.
Pierre is now 9-4 and 8-3 in South Dakota games. The Govs will face Brookings on Friday on the road and then hosting Brandon Valley on Saturday. All games will be on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports.
