The Pierre Governor baseball team would split its two games on Friday agains the North Dakota teams as the Govs would drop the first game against Grand Forks Central 5-4, but Bridger Babcock had a walk off single in game two to beat West Fargo 8-7 in eight innings.
In game one, Pierre would go down 5-0 after three and a half innings, but the Govs would start to mount a comeback. In the bottom of the fourth, Pierre would get two runs as Ridge Leimbach would single home the first run of the game and score on a double steal to make it 5-2 after four. An RBI ground out in the fifth made it 5-3 and the Govs got back within one on another Leimbach RBI single in the bottom of the seventh. However, the Govs left the tying run on at third falling in the first game. John Neuharth would throw the first three and 2/3 innings giving up five runs on five hits with five walks and a strikeout. Babcock wold not allow a run on three hits with one walk and five strikeouts in the final three and 1/3.
In game two, Pierre would take a 6-1 lead after the three innings which included an inside the park grands slam from Sutton Sonnenschein in the bottom of the third. But it would be a six run fourth for West Fargo to take a 7-6 lead and the score would hold until the bottom of seventh when Trevor Rounds had an RBI sacrifice fly to tie the game. Porter Hunsley would work a scoreless eighth and after Dawson Getz led off with a single and went to second on a ground out. Sonnenschein would be intentionally walked allowing Babcock to get the game winning hit to secure the win. Hunsley pitched the last three innings to get the win as he only gave up three walks with three strikeouts.
Pierre is now 3-1 on the season and will face their two South Dakota teams on Saturday. Pierre first will face Roosevelt at 10:30 this morning and then O’Gorman at 3:00. KCCR’s next broadcast will be on Thursday, April 17 at home against Aberdeen.
