The Pierre Governor high school baseball team is set to begin the season this weekend with a trip out west to face the Stevens Raiders tonight with games scheduled for Saturday now canceled.
The Governors fell just one game short of making the state tournament last year with a best-of-three series loss to the Yankton Bucks in the playoffs. Pierre finished at 13-11 and had seven seniors graduate from last year’s team. George Stalley returns after being second on the team in hits last season as he enters his senior year. Ridge Leimbach also enters his senior year and will be back after being injured at the beginning of the high school season last year, but still being recognized as an All-State caliber player. Sophomore, Sutton Sonnenschein was second on the team in hits and led the team in RBIs for Post 8 this past summer.
The Govs will open the season against the Raiders who they lost to in the opening game last year 13-3 and went 1-2 against overall. Stevens finished at 20-6, losing in the first round of the state tournament. Because of the threat of weather on Saturday, both precipitation and low temperatures, those games will not be played.

It has been usual for the Governors to travel to the western side of the state to begin the season and this is no different. Raue says it is good to travel at the beginning…
