Democrats have won control of both the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate following the November 3, 2026, midterm elections, changing the balance of power in Washington.
CNN’s election coverage confirmed that Democrats secured the House majority and gained enough Senate seats to take control of both chambers, ending Republican leadership in Congress.
Several closely watched Senate races contributed to the outcome. Democrats secured victories in Texas, Iowa, Kansas, Ohio, and North Carolina, including states that have traditionally supported Republican candidates.
The election also brought changes in governors’ offices across the country, with Democrats winning key races in Texas, Ohio, Iowa, and Georgia.
Voter concerns about the cost of living, economic conditions, and the direction of the federal government were prominent throughout the campaign.
The results will have significant implications for President Donald Trump’s remaining two years in office. With Democrats controlling Congress beginning in January 2027, the administration will need support from opposition lawmakers to advance major legislation.
