Faith Man Convicted In Federal Court Of Burglary Charge

PIERRE, (KCCR) — A federal jury in Pierre has convicted a Faith man of burglary. The jury returned the guilty verdict following a two-day trial on April 2nd. U-S Attorney Ron Parsons says 34 year-old Dalton Hump was found guilty on a single count of First-Degree Burglary. Evidence established during the trial showed that Hump unlawfully entered a Ziebach County residence on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation on July 10th of 2024. In addition to the burglary, Hump assaulted two people inside the residence before he was forced outside. No charges were brought regarding those assaults. Hump was indicted on the Burglary charge in October of last year. A presentence investigation was ordered. A Sentencing date has not be determined. Hump is currently in the custody of the US Marshals Service pending sentencing. Federal First Degree Burglary carries a maximum sentence of 25 years in federal custody and or a 250-thousand dollar fine, along with five years of supervised release. The case was prosecuted under the Major Crimes Act, that mandates certain violent crimes that alleged to have occurred in Indian County, be handled in federal court instead of state court.
