The Pierre Governor baseball team will start the season 0-2 falling 5-4 and 3-2 to the Yankton Bucks Saturday night on the road.
It was a four run first inning for Yankton in game one as Carter Boomsma and Christian Weier had back-to-back two RBI singles and Yankton looked like they were off and running. But Will Danburg settled into the game allowing just one more run over the next two and one third innings as he finished giving up five runs on five hits with three walks. Ryker Edson threw the final two and two thirds innings allowing just one hit and a walk with three strikeouts to keep Yankton off the board as the Govs started to mount a comeback. Pierre scored three runs in the third Hudson Shaffer, Porter Hunsley and Parker O’Bryan each getting an RBI with an error to score a run in the top of the fourth and Pierre got within one, 5-4. But Beck Ryken finished off the win allowing just the one unearned run over the final four innings allowing just one hit to close the door and give Yankton the first win.
Danburg would open up the scoring in the second in game two with an RBI double before Carter Schiefelbein made it 2-0 with an RBI single. But Pierre couldn’t add any more the rest of the way. Carter Templeton had four shutout innings before allowing two runs in the fifth finishing the night with three hits, four walks and six strikeouts in five innings of work. An unearned run would score in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly to give Yankton the lead 3-2. Schiefelbein would get a one out triple in the top of the seventh, but would be stranded as the Govs start the season at 0-2.
Pierre will travel to Tea on Sunday for a doubleheader. First pitch is at 12:00 with coverage starting at 11:45. KCCR Sports will have full coverage of both games and KCCR radio will join the broadcast after the church service ends around 12:00.
