In the first of three guaranteed games, Team South Dakota 14U would fall in a 2-1 game on Wednesday in Rochester, Michigan to the Honeybaked team out of Michigan.
Team South Dakota went down 1-0 after two periods and trailed 2-0 with 9:22 remaining in the third, but Team SD started to battle back. Sioux Center’s Maci Cannegeiter would make it 2-1 as Sioux Falls’ Charlee Wehrspann and Brookings’ Brooke Kruse would assist on the goal. With 1:34, Honeybaked would take a penalty giving Team SD basically the remaining time on the power play and able to pull the goalie making it a 6-on-4 chance. However, the team from Michigan was able to clear the puck with around 20 seconds remaining and not allow South Dakota to get back into the offensive zone and holding on for the 2-1 win. Yankton’s Makenzie Brunick made 29 saves on 31 shots in net for Team South Dakota.
Team SD will play an early morning game on Thursday. South Dakota faces the New Jersey Colonials who are 1-0 with a 3-0 win on Wednesday. Puck drop is at 8:15 AM Central Time in Rochester, Michigan.
