PIERRE, (KCCR) — A Rock Valley, Iowa man has been sentenced to three years in prison on drug charges filed as a result of a fatal vehicle pedestrian crash in September of 2025 in Hughes County. Twenty-eight year-old Taylor Reece Hanson was sentenced by Sixth Circuit Judge Christina Klinger to eight years, however she suspended five years. She also denied a request for a suspended imposition of sentence on both the felony Manufacture, Distribution or Possession of Drugs charge and a misdemeanor ingestion charge. In pleading for the suspended imposition, Hanson’s attorney David Siebrasse says Hanson has a limited criminal record, is gainfully employed and that due the nature of the case feared for Hanson’s safety if sent to prison. Hughes County States Attorney Casey Jo Deibert say reading the presentence investigation made her sick to her stomach as Hanson blamed the victim for the crash that killed 23 year-old Elvera Driving Hawk of Kennebec. Deibert says Driving Hawk was motioning for Hanson to stop because she needed help. Klinger says Hanson showed a lack of remorse and that the crash didn’t happen due to a person stepping in front of his vehicle.
