Just days away from the start of the high school baseball season, the Pierre Governors are ready to go after a mild winter and an opportunity to get practices inside too.
The Governor baseball team went 17-8 last season falling to the Watertown Arrows in the regional round going 0-2. However, the Govs will bring a core back to this year’s team as Sutton Sonnenschein, Parker O’Bryan, Carter Schiefelbein, Porter Hunsley return all appearing in more than 15 games. Will Danburg, turns to being the number one pitcher after having the most innings pitched last season and Ridge Leimbach and JJ Bucholz graduating, who were two and three in innings pitched. Scott Raue, head coach of the Pierre Governors says they still have plenty of young guys who be playing for this team…
Raue heads into his second year as the head coach of the Govs after filling the role when Steve Gray, the program’s only other head coach, retired. Raue says going into the second season, it’s been a smoother preseason…
Raue runs the High Performance Academy and the space has grown since last fall moving up on Garfield on the north end of town. Raue says the ability to utilize the facility over the winter and being able to be outside leading up the first game has been huge to get guys more game ready than before…
At the sub varsity level, the Governors are adding a third team to the mix with a JV and now Freshman/Sophomore team. Raue says it’s exciting to add another team to High School baseball…
The Governor varsity team will open the season on Saturday and Sunday this weekend against Yankton and Tea on the road. Coverage of both doubleheaders and the season will be on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports with Jon Winkler on the call.
